Welcome back!
So finally, after what, forever, BluHelix is back online.
I ran into a mountain of trouble with the server. After making a list and slowly crossing of things that we were pretty sure were not causing the trouble, I took a guess on the problem-component.
Basically from my tests I knew that,
1. It was not the RAM (switched sticks multiple times with sticks from my main computer, and changed up which socket I inserted them into on the motherboard)
2. It was not the hard drive – since I received the exact same problems from running Knoppix with all hard drives removed
3. And the big relief – it was not the CPU, since I was able to swap in my uncle’s CPU and the problem persisted.
So what was it? I took the gamble that it was the motherboard. Amazingly, only minutes before I purchased one over the Internet I discovered that my friend was selling his old computer. And the motherboard included was perfect for my needs. His motherboard had sockets for DDR RAM and SDRAM. Recall, I have no spare DDR RAM and was steeling sticks from my main system. But SDRAM I have plenty – one stick of 512 MB and another of 256 MB – which is more than sufficient for my purposes. And so I convinced my friend to sell me his motherboard seperately from the rest of the system and I walked away with a pretty inexpensive solution to a time-costly nightmare.
With that I had about two weeks of software problems to tackle on my spare time. So far, things have been falling in place – though there remains some unfinished tasks.
The big bugs so far are,
- I have to figure out the sendmail application for linux. For now I have disabled mail activation – though it is uncertain if it is actually possible to register even then
- The thumbnail generator for the photo gallery is not cooperating. I have the php tool kits installed but they are not working. So for now the load times from the gallery are significantly longer than the final product.
More updates soon!
